Reford Gardens

What’s your favourite colour? I think I love them all. In my gardens, I grow flowers of every colour. In the summer, it feels like walking through a rainbow.

In this colouring illustration, a path winds through the garden. In the foreground, at the bottom of the path, there are flowers with long stems and a few lance-shaped leaves. Farther up in the flowerbed, many flowers and leafy bushes appear on both sides of the path. In the distance, there’s also a bench, a fence, and a few leafy trees.Watercolour of the Blue Poppy Garden and the Azalea Walk, vibrant with colour. The path is lined with trees and shrubs with green foliage. The blue of the poppies in the foreground contrasts with the yellow, white, orange, and red of the azaleas. The brightness of this vividly coloured drawing captures the feeling of a beautiful summer day.

A Rainbow of Colours

Even though I love all colours, blue is one I’m especially fond of. In 1933, I planted my first blue poppies. I was the first in Quebec to grow them—what an adventure! Blue poppies come from far away, the Himalayas, and they can be quite temperamental. They need special care throughout their growth to ensure they bloom. These blue flowers can only be seen from late June to mid-July. What a sight!

Planting azaleas was also quite a challenge! I was the first in Canada to try growing them in a northern region like Grand-Métis. I must say, I’m enchanted by the bright colours of azaleas. In this area, I also plant tuberous begonias, forget-me-nots, crabapple trees, and many other plants. All of these add stunning colours to my garden, from spring right through to the end of summer.
